We require all our of tutors to have experience in teaching or tutoring children so that we can provide our students with high standards of tuition. We are looking for qualified teachers with at least 2 years experience, but we will also consider newly qualified teachers or graduates on a case-by-case basis, depending on previous experience.
We require tutors to have an up-to-date (no less than 2 years old) enhanced DBS check (see below) which you need to upload to your account. We also require two references, one from a previous tutoring client or employer. It would also be useful to upload your CV to your account.
The first step is to register with us by creating an account and providing some details about yourself such as your qualifications, teaching experience and expectations. It is important that you provide us with as much information as possible and supporting documents such as a CV, and DBS certificate – so that we can progress your registration.
Once we have all the information we require, we will get in touch with you to arrange an informal consultation. This is a 30 minute discussion (usually on Zoom) to find out more about you, before we can approve you as a tutor.
We will then get in touch again once we have found you a suitable student match.
The amount of money you can make will be based on your experience, academic achievements and feedback. You set your own tutoring rate but we can guide you on the market prices and what clients are willing to pay. We take a small commission for our services, which is paid by the client, so you take home 100% of your tutoring rate.
We take safeguarding very seriously and require all of our tutors to have an enhanced DBS check with ‘Children’s Barred List’ check.
We ask our tutors to have an enhanced DBS check that is no more than 2 years old and to preferably register on the Update Service.
If you do not already have suitable DBS check then you can obtain an enhanced DBS check through our agency at a reduced rate. Please get in touch with us if you would like to use this service.
When you start clocking up hours tutoring with us, you may need to tell HMRC about your extra income. We have explained some of the basics about this below, but we always recommend that you get professional tax advice from an accountant.
HMRC allows you to earn £1,000 a year before you have to declare your income to them. This is your ‘tax free allowance’ and applies to anything and everything you earn (whether it’s solely from Top Class Tutor, or from other places too).
If you earn more than £1,000 in the year from April to April, you need to declare this income to HMRC through a Tax Return (also known as a Self Assessment).
If you’re not sure if you’ve earned that much, you can find your total income by going to your Income page on your Top Class Tutor account.
