Education in the Tees Valley

The quality of the education of our children in the Tees Valley is actually looking good overall compared to the national average. But there are significant areas for improvement if we want to improve the outcomes and future prospects of our young people in the area.

  • 88% of primary schools are rated as good/outstanding by Ofsted
  • 54% of pupils meet the expected standard in reading, writing and maths at Key Stage 2, compared to 53% nationally
  • Only 50% of secondary schools are rated as good/outstanding by Ofsted
  • 54% of pupils gained 5 or more A*-C grade GCSEs (including English and Maths), which matches the national figure
  • 92% of Tees Valley secondary pupils either stayed in education or went onto employment on leaving, compared to 94% nationally.
  • 74% of colleges are rated as good/outstanding, although the average point score per entry was 29.14 compared to 31.79 nationally.

As you can see from figures taken from 2017, the quality of Tees Valley primary schools is above the national average.

Progress between Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 compared to pupils across England who got similar results at Key Stage 1 is very good with 89% of pupils either meeting the national average or making progress above or well above in Maths; this figure reduces slightly to 88% in Writing and 85% in Reading.

The quality of Tees Valley secondary schools is average.

The average attainment 8 score in Tees Valley is 47.8, slightly lower that the national figure of 48.5.

Progress between Key Stage 2 and GCSE is below average with 52% of pupils making progress which was below or well below the national average, when compared to pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 2.

The quality of Tees Valley colleges is below average.

11% of Tees Valley post 16 pupils achieved an AAB or higher in at least 2 facilitating A Level subjects compared to 17% nationally.

Progress between GCSEs and A-Levels is slightly above national average with 56% of pupils either meeting the national average or making progress above or well above compared to similar students across England.

So the picture for our children in the Tees Valley looks positive, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. By providing opportunities to improve educations on our doorstep, we hope that we can play some part in raising the academic outcomes for our residents.
